Needing Certificates of Approval to Marriage in UK
If you are not British or a citizen from an EEA country, or you are subject to immigration
control while in the UK, you may need to apply for a Certificate of Approval from
the Home Office to get married legally or to enter into a civil partnership in the
UK.
If you are coming to the UK from overseas to get married or register your civil
partnership, before you can give a registrar notice to marry or register your civil
partnership you must have in your passport:
• fiancé(e) entry clearance.
• proposed civil partner entry clearance.
• marriage visitor entry clearance.
• civil partnership visitor entry clearance.
If you are already in the UK, before giving a registrar notice to marry or register
your civil partnership you will need to:
• have settled status in the UK.
• obtain a certificate of approval.
There is no right of appeal against a refusal of a certificate of approval so
it is important to get the right advice.
